7 Myths About Your Back Pain
At some point in our lives, 80% of us will experience back pain. It could be an annoying ache or a sudden, stabbing sensation. Either way, living with back pain can prevent us from doing the things we love most in life, like sports, traveling, or just going for a walk.
But there are significantly more myths surrounding back pain than as many reliable cures and treatments as there are out there. Today’s blog post reveals the seven most common back pain myths.
- It Is Not Genetic – Substantive research shows certain diseases such as lumbar degenerative disc disease or osteoarthritis of the spine may be inherited.
- Paralysis Can Occur – Most pain is related to bony tissues in the back. Paralysis occurs when the spinal cord is damaged so terribly that motor signals are reduced or lost.
- Avoid Heavy Weights – Rest is often the best medicine for back pain. Still, if cleared to exercise, it is essential to lift with the proper form more so than reducing the weight.
- Rest Is the Best Medicine – Some rest is good. However, laying in bed for days at a time could do more harm than good as movement helps blood circulation and healing.
- Purchase a Firm Mattress – Generally, medium-firm mattresses result in less back pain. Understanding how you sleep is the best indicator of your mattress’s firmness.
- Sitting All Day Is the Culprit – It is not recommended to sit in a stationary position for long periods. However, studies show doing so does not directly cause back pain.
- You Should Always Sit Straight – While good posture strengthens back muscles and can reduce injury, sitting straight for long periods of time can have the opposite effect.
For most adults, back pain is just a part of life. Fortunately, there are proven alternative and western medical treatments that can help. You know your body best. But, like any medical condition, seek a second or third opinion. It can mean the difference between having to live with the pain or being able to live your best life.
